British Fashion Awards: Erdem, Kane and Saunders up for new prize

Erdem, Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders have been announced as nominees for the inaugural New Establishment prize at the British Fashion Awards.
The new accolade was announced a mere 24 hours before the annual industry awards ceremony, which takes place November 28 at London's Savoy Theatre.
The new prize has been created to recognize designers that have helped develop a new movement in British style, having a direct impact on the way British women dress.
According to The British Fashion Council, Erdem, Kane and Saunders were selected for their business growth, generating an international buzz with their collections and putting on impressive London Fashion Week shows. See video highlights from all three labels' Spring/Summer 2012 shows here:

The ceremony could be a big night for Kane and Erdem, as it was revealed back in September both designers are also in the running for the prestigious Designer of the Year accolade alongside Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.
Back in February Kane scooped the 2011 British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, beating off competition from designers including Saunders, Osman Yousefzada, Richard Nicoll and Peter Pilotto.
The prize, which comprises a cash payout of £200,000 (€ 232, 000) as well as mentoring from industry insiders, was launched in 2010, with Erdem winning in the inaugural year.
Nominees in other categories for the 2011 British Fashion Awards including Emerging Talent and Accessory Designer were announced back in September.
It was also revealed last week that Paul Smith will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design prize at the 2011 British Fashion Awards, following in the footsteps of creators such as Vivienne Westwood, Stephen Jones and John Galliano.

Bloggers turn designer for new shoe line

While fashion purists may argue bloggers already have too much power in the fashion world, a series of shoes designed by some of the most prominent online trendsetters will go on sale November 22.
Bloggers including Susie Lau of Style Bubble, Style Salvage's Steve Salter, Leandra Medine of the Man Repeller, and Face Hunter's Yvan Rodic have collaborated with footwear producer Six London and website Farfetch.com to each create an "ultimate shoe."
The range includes chukka boots, fluorescent wedges and stilettos, with prices ranging from $328 to $608, and will be available for purchase online from international designer retailer Farfetch.com and Six London's website.
Watch a video documenting the collaboration at http://youtu.be/j45Brt2ZTaM.
This isn't the first time the realms of blogging and design have collided, and it's a phenomenon which appears to be becoming increasingly popular.
Leandra Medine, who created a chunky blue and red shoe boot for Six London, has also collaborated with Miami-based brand Del Toro on a limited-edition smoking slipper which will be available on the brand's website early December.
Meanwhile, footwear retailer Shoedazzle.com has teamed up with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who also writes about style on his CocoPerez blog. Hilton has come up with a studded platform shoe and a unisex sneaker to raise money for the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network as part of the monthly ShoeDazzle Cares charity program.
The styles retail at $40 and are available now until the end of November at Shoedazzle.com

Top ten fashion films of the season, ranked by the Business of Fashion

Fashion media have long ranked each season's best advertising campaigns, but fashion films are still a rather new phenomenon that have only recently managed to reach a larger audience.
Respected fashion site the Business of Fashion started listing the season's best fashion videos two years ago and since then recorded a "staggering rise of online video consumption and the growing importance of engaging young digital consumers."
Here are its top ten for fall/winter 2011 with comments from the editors.
1. Lanvin Fall/Winter 2011 Ad Campaign
"It was Lanvin's viral sensation [shot by Steven Meisel], featuring Karen Elson and Raquel Zimmermann dancing awkwardly to "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" by Pitbull, that proved to be the game-changer that propelled fashion film decisively into the mainstream."

2. Prada Fall/Winter 2011 Ad Campaign
"Prada's fall womenswear video, shot by Steven Meisel and featuring Antonia Wesseloh, Ondria Hardin, Kelly Mittendorf, Julia Zimmer and Frida Gustavsson, perfectly captures and communicates the delicate co-mingling of sensuality and innocence at the heart of Mrs. Prada's collection."

3. Mourir Aupres De Toi by Spike Jonze & Olympia Le-Tan
"Set after-hours on the shelves of famous [Paris] Left Bank bookstore Shakespeare & Company, Spike Jonze's quirky stop-motion animation "Mourir Aupres De Toi" brings to life the embroidered ‘covers' of Olympia Le-Tan's book-clutch bags to tell the touching story of a clumsy skeleton and his lover."

4. "Dynamic Blooms" by Nick Knight & Alister Mackie
"Recently released by experimental filmmakers Tell No One in collaboration with SHOWstudio, this succinct, visually stunning film brings to life Nick Knight and Alister Mackie's breathtaking editorial for last season's AnOther Magazine."

5. Prabal Gurung Resort 2012 - "New Thing" feat. Rye Rye
"For the launch of his first ever foray into resort, inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and the portraits of George Condo, rising designer Prabal Gurung teamed up with booty-shaking Baltimore artist Rye Rye to create a viral music video as bold and energetic as the collection."
6. AnOther Magazine Issue 21 featuring Rachel Weisz
"Shot by Craig McDean with creative direction by David James and styling by Olivier Rizzo, this off-kilter film features Rachel Weisz, cover star of this season's AnOther Magazine, in a series of non-narrative micro-performances, inspired by German modern dance legend Pina Bausch."

7. Love F/W 2011 What Lies Beneath by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott
"Complete with white swans, bondage gear and submerged cars, this sexually-charged and transfixing film unfolds like a classical myth."

8. Gareth Pugh S/S 2012 by Ruth Hogben
"Integrated into the runway event, the film both set the tone at the beginning of the show and provided a digital backdrop to the models on the catwalk, turning the presentation of Pugh's collection into a multimedia viewing experience for the assembled press, buyers and industry insiders."
9. Twin Parallel by Justin Anderson
"Directed by Justin Anderson for London-based designer Jayne Pierson and inspired by the twin paradox in physics, this beautiful film won this season's ‘Best Styling' prize at Diane Pernet's A Shaded View on Fashion Film festival."
10. Kenzonique by Kenzo
"This snappy and upbeat trailer for the relaunch of Kenzo, directed by Jo Ratcliffe with music by Rob Coudert, perfectly teased the energy of the brand's first presentation under new creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony."

5 Hairstyles to Try for the Holidays

Bouffant Bun
Haven’t washed your hair this week? We know: Life gets hectic over the holidays. Luckily, all you need is a round brush, some shine serum, and a spritz of hairspray to tame fly-aways and you’ll be the belle of the ball once again. This sleek bun is perfect if you’re running late to a Friday night dinner party.

Casual French Twist
This easy-to-do chignon is girly and pretty. Pros: It’s great for a low-back dress, it takes under five minutes to complete, and it’ll still look good if you get caught in the rain. Cons: It won’t take long for your BFF to rush to a mirror and steal your look!
Va-Va-Volume!
A little curling, a lot of teasing, and voila! Nothing says sexy like big, voluminous hair. Save this show-stopping ’do for New Year’s Eve and play up the sex appeal with dangly earrings and a chic body-con dress.
Embellished Headband
Channel 1970s glam, and spice up even the simplest party dress by parting pin-straight hair down the middle and wearing a shimmery, lacy headband to a festive event, like your city’s tree lighting ceremony.

Multiple-Braid Bun
Here at Marie Claire, we go ga-ga for braids! Although this hairstyle takes some time (and a lot of skill), we’re loving the crown-to-ear fishtail plaits that end in one big (can we call it a low-knot?) bun. A swanky Christmas party would be the perfect place to rock this hair.
